BABY BIRDS...

A few weeks ago, after I mowed the lawn (okay, mostly just the front yard), Scott finished up the slack. While he was out mowing the back and trimming around all those trees, he came upon this little tree. As he began to trim, a bird came flying out from it. When he got a closer look where this bird came from, this is what he saw: About a week later, I went out to see if they had hatched and this is what I found: Mama bird was sitting on hatched or unhatched eggs. In order to see, I finally had to get a little too close so Mama would move. She didn't move far: When I got a closer peek, this is what I found: I know it's hard to see, but there are four little scruntched up baby birds in the nest. They look like just a fir ball with some chicken skin showing through. A few days later, this is what they looked like: Still four little birds, this time with some feathers beginning. Mama must have been off finding food because she was nowhere to be found. By the way, one of my favorite books when I was little was, "Are you my Mother?". After the storm, the first thing I did was run outside (it was still raining and we still had the thunder storm going) to check on my baby birds. I could not find the nest ANYWHERE! I was in a panic. I was walking the yard looking for the nest and baby birds. Then my neighbor came in our backyard looking for her cat. YIKES! I felt bad she couldn't find her cat, but I was worried her cat ATE my little birds. Then, after looking deeper down in the little tree, there was the nest -complete with all four little birds. WHEW! I went out a few days later, and this is what I found: This little guy was sitting so bravely on the branch of the tree, out of the nest. You can even see some of his little patches of fur. In the nest were his siblings, still just hanging out: I went out the next morning after these last pics were taken to see if the siblings had made it out of the nest. They had. I didn't get a picture of the nest, but it was upside down in the tree and there were no birds to be found. HMMM. I wonder if in the night there had been a midnight masacur. Had an owl come, or was it my neighbors cat. Dalton thinks they were out having flying lessons with Mama. I am going to go with Dalton's theory, otherwise, the food chain has prevailed.

Sad... It amazes me how quickly baby birds grow up. We had doves, in michigan, which would nest in our yard. It amazed me how the eggs lasted so long, but the babies transitioned and left so quickly...

We had a next in a wreath on our front porch once. It was so cute! It was a tiny next, with five birds. They got so squished at the end. I bet your birds flew away. They look like they were ready. :)

I loved the book, 'Are you my mother'. It's one of my daughter's favorites right now. Lovely photos, by the way.

Well, that is a cute but sort of sad story... Ah well, I'm going to go with Dalton's theory too. They are probably out flying free somewhere in the fresh open air.

I just love bird pictures. And birds. Except blue jays, they peck my dog in the back yard. :(

I love this post. I had a robin's nest in one of the trees in yard. I came home several weeks ago and the nest was on the ground. No eggs or birds to be found.

I would love to have you join our new Meme, Oh Snap - It's Friday. Pictures like this are perfect or anything that will lift the spirit or make one laugh as we head into the week-end. Please stop by.
